Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal

After a tree comes down, the stump is the part people live with for years. Left alone, it gets in the way of the mower, can attract pests, and some species keep sprouting from it.

Grinding uses a machine with a toothed cutting wheel to chew the stump into chips below ground level. It's quicker, makes far less mess, and leaves your lawn and nearby plantings mostly undisturbed.

Full stump removal pulls out the stump and its main root ball. It usually takes heavier equipment and leaves a big hole to fill, so it's mostly used when something is being built on that exact spot.

After grinding, the remaining roots break down slowly underground. Clear out the grindings, fill the hole with soil, and you can seed or sod over it.

Before any digging, call 811 so underground utility lines can be marked. It's free, and it applies to stump work too.
